Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

I had some spare-time so I thought I will give you a new CD Time Glass episode. As you all know a while ago I changed the responding time of our Kai into seven days, a whole week, but (as you all know) haiku is an impression of a moment as short as the sound of a pebble thrown into water. That short time can help you to create your haiku (or tanka) based on that single moment.

I love to improve your haiku (and tanka) writing skills so I think this "Time Glass" feature can help you with that. But ... we are a haiku loving family from all over the world and we live all in different time zones, so I think it's a good thing to extend the (original) 24 hours of the "Time Glass" feature to 36 hours to respond on the theme.

That theme can be a haiku, a tanka, a waka, an image or just a word. For this Time Glass episode I have chosen a haiku written by myself to inspire you:

Carpe Diem Time Glass #35 weeping willow

It's Sunday and that means time for a new episode of our time challenging feature "Time Glass" in which is the goal to write/compose haiku (or tanka) inspired on a given prompt and photo within 24 hours. "Time Glass" challenges you to be in the moment, as short as the sound of a pebble thrown into water, the essence of haiku.

Carpe Diem Time Glass #34, "juxtaposition"

It's Sunday and that means time for our Time Glass feature in which the goal is to write a haiku (or tanka) inspired on a given prompt and image and share it within 24 hours. This week's Time Glass is a slightly different one as I normally do. This week's Time Glass is juxtaposition, a haiku writing technique in which to different images/scenes are coming together in one haiku (or tanka). To learn more about "juxtaposition" you can visit the "Haiku Writing Techniques"-episode "juxtaposition" or you can find it in our Haiku Writing Techniques e-book at the right side of our weblog or above in the menu.

This week I love to challenge you with two very different themes our prompt this week is "nude beach" and hereafter you can see the image you have to use too for your inspiration.

I tried it myself, mostly I do not share a haiku (or a tanka) in the Time Glass episodes, but this time I needed to do that to "show" what I mean as I ask you to use "juxtaposition" in your haiku (or tanka):

high up in the mountains
perpetual snow

Do you see the juxtaposition in this one? I think you do. I first tried a haiku, but I wasn't satisfied with it, but I will give you that haiku here too:

I was a bit sad as I ralized that I wouldn't have the time to create a new CD Time Glass episode and so I decided to try to find a few minutes ... and I succeeded in that .... so here is a new episode of this time challenging feature in which the goal is to write an all new haiku (or tanka) inspired on a given prompt and image, within 24 hours.

Carpe Diem Time Glass #31, Basho's "first celebrate"

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

It's my pleasure to bring you an all new episode of our time challenging feature "Time Glass" in which I challenge you all to sit in the moment, that short moment of the sound of a pebble thrown into water. That one moment in which you realize that a scene inspires you to write a haiku.
This week I will challenge you a little bit more. Mostly you have 24 hours to respond, but this week I will give you all just 18 hours to respond on a given prompt and image. This time our prompt is not a single word, but a haiku composed by Basho (1644-1694).

mazu iwae ume o kokoro no fuyu-gomeri

first celebrate

This Time Glass episode is about the "summer solstice" and the following image:

The goal is to write a haiku, tanka, kyoka or haibun (or haiga) inspired on this prompt and photo and to submit that within 24 hours. With this time challenging feature I try to "learn" you all to respond in a short time, just as a haiku is that short sound of a pebble thrown into water, ... not an easy task, but it's not impossible.

Today it's Easter and on this day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but it's also the real start of spring ... Easter brings new hope ... spring brings new life and I hope to see and feel a lot of sunshine this spring.

SUNSHINE is our prompt for this challenging feature in which you have 24 hours to respond and submit your haiku inspired on the prompt and this time a music-video of a song by Matisyahu a reggae singer who uses his Hebrew name on stage. I had never heard of him, but this song is really awesome and fits our prompt as a second skin. Enjoy his music and let it inspire you to write/compose an all new haiku.

Today, March 22nd, spring has started here with a great sunny day and that gives hope for an all wonderful spring. Trees start to blossom, but my Sakura hasn't started to bloom yet ... it will take a few days of sunny weather I think, but the buds are almost bursting into joy and colors ... Carpe Diem Time Glass #24

Here it is again ... The Time Glass feature in which the goal is to respond on the prompt and a given picture with a haiku or tanka within 24 hours. And today I just have a picture for you all ... or no ... it's a haiga which I made several years ago and which you maybe can know because I used it in our prompt-list for March.
I love to challenge you to write/compose an all new haiku (or tanka) in response on that haiga ... and if you think you can make a haiga yourself within 24 hours than you may also submit a haiga.

This haiga "Japanese Garden" I made in 2006 it was from a photo which I had taken several years earlier in a theme park in the province were I live. That theme park was about agriculture here in The Netherlands. In that park there was also a Japanese garden ... that's were I have taken this photo.

As you all know the Time Glass feature is a time-challenging feature ... you have to respond within 24 hours starting tonight at 7.00 PM (CET) and ending on Monday March 9th at 7.00 PM (CET). So you have just 24 hours.

It's Sunday again and that means ... time for another time challenging Tima Glass episode in which I challenge you all to write a haiku (or tanka) inspired on a given prompt and image within 24 hours.
This week, because of our Haiga Festival, I have chosen to challenge you with the following prompt "BAMBOO" and with a haiga which I have made a while ago (December 2013). By the way the haiku used in this haiga is far older than the haiga ... the haiku is a translation of a (Dutch) haiku which I wrote somewhere in the nineties..

So .... this Time Glass episode has the prompt BAMBOO and you have to/may use the haiga for your inspiration.

What a joy it was to have a weekend off and I have seen that Jen has done a great job and I hope you all did like her posts ... It was exciting to give my "pen" away for this weekend, but I am glad to have it (the pen) back. Thanks Jen for doing a great job this weekend ... maybe next month again?

It's Sunday again and so it is time for a new Time Glass episode in which you have to respond within 24 hours on a given image and prompt ... this week I ran into a wonderful poster of a Mother Giraffe giving her newborn the first kiss. This poster is made by Ron D'Raine and it is titled "first kiss".

So our Time Glass prompt is "frist kiss" and here is the image to which I was referring above:

On the unit where I am working in the hospital we have this poster on the wall ... and it's very comforting for all of us and our patients and their loved ones. It's a sweet poster, a nice scene and I think it will and can inspire you to write an all new haiku or tanka within 24 hours.

As you now when it is foggy the world looks spooky and very different ... it's almost as if you look at an impression of your own world. So this week's prompt is FOG.

Back to the task. Maybe you can remember our Kamishibai Extreme challenge (2014-November). In which I challenged you to write a haibun (prose and haiku) on a given prompt with only 55 words (including the haiku). For this Time Glass episode I will challenge you again to write a haibun, with only 75 words, including the haiku, in just 24 hours.

This month I have a central theme for our Haiku Kai, Impressionism, all our prompts are in some way connected to this kind of art and so this special feature Time Glass has also that theme.

Japanese Woodblock prints are wonderful impressions of nature and so I think this woodblock print of a Butterfly with Plum blossoms can be of great value for your inspiration.

Carpe Diem Time Glass #18, High Tea

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

As you could have read in the last CD-Extra I will publish our time challenging Time Glass feature from now on on Sundays, so today is the first "sunday"-episode of our Time Glass feature and I have chosen a prompt and image that fit to the sunday ... at least to me.
Today I have chosen for the prompt HIGH TEA and it's based on childhood-memories. When I was a kid the Sunday was church-going day and in the afternoon we had the obligation to visit my grandparents ... my grandmother always served a High Tea ... and it was always great to visit them, but sometimes I wouldn't, but ... well I had to of course.

I will explain the goal of this Time Glass to you. You have to write an all new haiku (classical or non-classical) inspired on the prompt and the image and submit it within 24 hours. Why such a short time? Well haiku are moments caught in three lines as short as the sound of a pebble thrown into water.
