Carpe Diem #955 morning

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

It's good to see how CDHK has a strong steady group of family-members and I thank you all for that. You all are the reason why I am continuing to create CDHK. Of course I miss a few of you, but that's okay. Maybe you know someone who is interested in haiku, tanka or other Japanese poetry form who loves to participate in our daily haiku meme ... feel free to invite them to visit us.

Today I have another nice modern kigo for spring as extracted from Jane Reichhold's "A Dictionary of Haiku". Today our prompt is morning and I think it can be an inspiration to you all. Maybe it's not that modern, because there are several classical kigo for spring which also point to morning, but I like how Jane has gathered a wonderful series of modern kigo and it's even more wonderful that she gives for all modern kigo examples. For example these for morning:

morning
drawing lines on the sea
one for the horizon

early morning
the weight of paper
waiting for poems

morning sun
coming down the cliff
the ocean night

rocks give way
morning light rolls over
eastern peaks

Morning Sun Rays
As I was preparing this new episode I couldn't help that my thoughts were fleeing away to my dad, may he rest in peace, and to the feeling and emotion the funeral triggered me. Than I saw the prompt for today morning. I realized that 'morning' sounds the same way as 'mourning' and that gave me an idea to create a haiku for today's episode. In that haiku I have tried to bring both words together and I think I succeeded:

morning
dewdrops evaporate
memories remain

A beauty I would say (how immodest), but it's the truth ... I have tried to create another one in which I use the both "meanings" of the word.

early morning
the old graveyard ... silent
fresh flowers bloom

I hope this episode will inspire you to create a haiga (or tank-art) on morning.

This episode is NOW OPEN for your submissions and will remain open until April 18th at noon (CET). I will try to publish our new episode, stars, later on. Have fun!

  1. I like how you include Jane's wonderful examples and your own, Kristjaan...two very lovely morning (mourning) haiku. Sometimes I just enjoy reading even when I don't take time to participate by writing :)

  4. Mine is late. I cannot figure out how I did the last Haiga, but I was unable to do it this time.
