Carpe Diem #1748 Via Francigena, Umbria, Italy

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

This month we are on pilgrimage routes all around the world themed "an act of devotion". Pilgrimages are walking routes for believers of all kind ... it's a walk to a place that's important for them. We have seen several routes already and today I have another wonderful one for you. The pilgrimage we walk today is the "Via Francigena". It is believed that Francis of Assisi walked this route from Spoleto (Italy) to Farfa to offer his order of Franciscanes to the Pope.

Let me tell you a little bit more about this pilgrimage:

This is a seven-night pilgrimage down the spine of Italy that starts from Spoleto, just south of Assisi, and ends at the Abbey of Farfa from where the dome of Saint Peter’s in Rome, 40 miles away, is usually visible. The route follows long stretches of the Via Francigena with its many churches and shrines dedicated to St Francis including Greccio, where he is believed to have invented the first Christmas crib, and his cell near Cortona.

I remember that I once made a series about Francis of Assisi with quotes by him back in 2014. I recall the following quote:

[...] "Remember that when you leave this earth you can taken nothing of what you have received, but only what you have a given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice, and courage". [...]

And here is the haiku I created inspired on this quote:

Carpe Diem Special #109, Words by Francis of Assisi 4

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

This is our last CD Special of this month. I have found another nice quote by Francis of Assisi for your inspiration. I hope you do like it and that it will inspire you to write an all new haiku, senryu, tanka or kyoka.

[...] “A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.” [...]

This is a great quote and I think it's almost a haiku ... here is my attempt to write an all new haiku inspired on this quote by Francis.

moving shadows
as the sun climbs to his throne -
Peter Pan was here

Hm ... not a strong one, but I have tried to bring some humor in it. And ... humor isn't my "cup of tea".

Carpe Diem Special #108, Words by Francis of Assisi (3)

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

Another CD Special episode in which I bring you quotes by Francis of Assisi for your inspiration. And this time I have (at least I think it is) a wonderful quote by him:

[...] "Remember that when you leave this earth you can taken nothing of what you have received, but only what you have a given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice, and courage". [...]

Isn't it a wonderful quote? But to write a haiku inspired on this quote will not be an easy task, but I have to try of course.

Carpe Diem Special #107, Words said by Francis of Assisi

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

What a nice day we had today (Sunday, September 14th). My youngest daughter and her boyfriend and Myron (our youngest grandson) came visiting us. I enjoyed it a lot and ofcourse had to 'shoot' photo's of Myron. He's almost 6 months now and has always a smile on his face ... it's really a joy to see him.

Today we have our second quote by Francis of Assisi for your inspiration. Here it is:

[...] "All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” [...]

As I read this quote a haiku by Yosa Buson came in mind directly ... it's a nice haiku and I have here a "modern" translation:

the light of a candle
is transferred to another candle—
spring twilight

What to say more? This episode speaks for itself.

This episode is open for your submissions tonight at 7.00 PM (CET) and will remain open until September 18th at noon (CET). I will publish our next post, a new GW-post, later on. For now ... have fun!

Carpe Diem Special #105, Francis of Assisi's first quote

Dear haijin, visitors and travelers,

As you maybe know this months Specials are all quotes by Francis of Assisi. I recently read an article about him and I was touched by his transformation from son of a rich merchant to a man of God living with only the things provided by him by his God. He is really an inspiration for a lot of people and so he is also an inspiration for me. I am not a poor guy, but I am certainly not rich. My life isn't about money, my life is about giving and sharing unconditional love with all and everything around me. And (of course) sharing my passion for haiku (smiles).
So this month our CD Specials are all quotes by Francis and I hope they will inspire you all to write/compose wonderful new haiku, senryu, tanka, kyoka and haibun. For this first CD Special of September I have chosen the following quote by Francis:

[...] "For it is in giving that we receive." [...]

This quote is a wellknown one I think. In this quote we can read all ideas and believes of Francis of Assisi. He was a man of giving and he never asked for something, he was always glad with the little things which were given to him by good people, by nature and by God.

I think that we are receiving the same as we give. As we give love, we will receive love. If we give a wonderful haiku to someone, he/she will grant us with gratefulness ... Life is all about giving and be gratefull for that we will receive.

she grants me a smile
and whispers "thank you for caring"-

I think I have to explain this haiku a little bit without details. As you all know I am an oncology-nurse and in my work I encounter patients who need help, but not them alone need help their relatives also need my help and warm attention, because they will stay behind as their beloved ones dying.

This episode is open for your submissions tonight at 7.00 PM (CET) and will remain open until September 6th at noon (CET). I will post our next episode, grief, later on.
