Carpe Diem's Tan Renga Challenge weekend-meditation #1 raindrops

Carpe Diem Tan Renga Challenge weekend-meditation

!! Open for your submissions next Sunday September 10th at 7:00 PM (CET) !!!

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

Welcome at the first "weekend-meditation" of September 2017. This month I have "new" weekend-meditations for you. This month those will be Tan Renga, Soliloquy no Renga and Rengay. For this first "weekend-meditation" I have chosen a Tan Renga challenge. (More about Tan Renga and examples of Tan Renga you can find above in the menu).

Tan Renga is a short renga created by two poets. The first stanza, 3 lines (hokku) and the second stanza, 2 lines (Ageku). The 2nd stanza you have to create through associating on images in the first stanza. To make this first "new" weekend-meditation a real challenge I ask you to create Tan Renga with two classical haiku I will give. To make it even more a challenge I love to challenge you to create a so called "squared" Tan Renga, that means you have to create a short renga of four stanza (or two Tan Renga).

Shantytown Soweto
Let me give you an example:

hokku:

so many temples
all breaths become one
the steps flow

together with the one I love
on a pilgrimage to happiness               (Chèv)

happiness shared
as we walk through shantytowns
bread and water                                    (Chèv)

unconditional love
as we walk our path together               (Chèv)

This is what I call a "squared Tan Renga", the hokku was written by one of our former family-members, and the three following stanza were created by myself.

raindrops

Okay back to our present "weekend-meditation". Here are the two haiku to use:

The first haiku to use and create a "Squared Tan Renga" with is one by Kobayashi Issa, one of the five greatest haiku poets:

three raindrops
a greeting card from heaven...
midsummer heat

© Issa

And here is the other haiku to create a Squared Tan Renga with:

flying away
following the rainbow
into heaven

© Chèvrefeuille

Well ... I think this is an awesome "weekend-meditation" and I am looking forward to your responses. This "weekend-meditation" is open for your submissions next Sunday September 10th at 7:00 PM (CET) and will close on September 17th at noon (CET). I will try to publish our new 'regular' episode around that time too. You can find a preview for the next 'regular' CD Imagination episode on our CDHK Tumblr. Have a great weekend!

Carpe Diem Tan Renga Squared #2, Björn Rudberg's "Loon is calling"

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

It is my pleasure to bring you a new episode of our Tan Renga Challenge with a twist ... Tan Renga Squared. The goal of Carpe Diem Tan Renga Squared is to write a second stanza to a given haiku (as we do in our Tan Renga Challenge) and a new 3-line stanza and 2-line stanza. So the goal is to write a short linked verse of four (4) stanzas.

For this second episode of 'Carpe Diem Tan Renga Squared' I have chosen a haiku by Björn Rudberg of Björn Rudberg's Writings. He wrote this one in response on our first episode of our new feature Carpe Diem's "Arti-Visual" haiku of yesterday. I think this haiku by Björn can be of inspiration for you.

His haiku will be the first stanza (3 lines) and you have to complete this Tan Renga Squared with three other stanzas respectively following 2 lines, 3 lines and 2 lines. To make it a little bit more difficult I love to see that your last stanza (2 lines) has a association with the first stanza by Björn. Well ... good luck.

Björn provided us with a nice haiga for our "Arti-Visual" feature and I love to share that haiga here before I start our Tan Renga Squared Challenge.

A wonderful haiga as I may say. I was immediately in love with this beautiful haiga and I just had to use his haiku for this week's Tan Renga Squared Challenge.

evening mist
memories are fading
loon is calling

© Björn Rudberg

A nice haiku to start this Tan Renga Squared Challenge with I think ... so here is my attempt to write a Tan Renga Squared:

evening mist
memories are fading
loon is calling                                             (Björn)

wisps of fog dancing on the heath
far away the sound of howling                  (Chèvrefeuille)

at the eastern sky
clouds dressed in thousand colors
a new day rises                                         (Chèvrefeuille)

I awake with the song of birds -
the sparkling of morning dew                  (Chèvrefeuille)

Pff ... this wasn't easy ... so I wish you all good luch with this Tan Renga with a twist ... Have fun!

This Tan Renga Squared Challenge is NOW OPEN for your submissions and will remain open until next Friday September 19th at noon (CET).

Carpe Diem Tan Renga Squared #1, Cathy Tenzo's ''the steps flow''

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

It is a pleasure to introduce to you an all new special feature here on Carpe Diem Haiku Kai. It is very similar with our weekly Tan Renga Challenge, but with a twist ...
The goal of Carpe Diem Tan Renga Squared is to write a second stanza to a given haiku (as we do in our Tan Renga Challenge) and a new 3-line stanza and 2-line stanza. So the goal is to write a short linked verse of four (4) stanzas.'

For this first episode of 'Carpe Diem Tan Renga Squared' I have chosen a haiku by Cathy Tenzo of Haiku Plate Special. She wrote this one in response on our pilgrimage in March. I think this haiku by Cathy can be of inspiration for you.

Her haiku will be the first stanza (3 lines) and you have to complete this Tan Renga Squared with three other stanzas respectively following 2 lines, 3 lines and 2 lines. To make it a little bit more difficult I love to see that your last stanza (2 lines) has a association with the first stanza by Cathy. Well ... good luck.

Here is my attempt to compose a short 4 linked Renga:

so many temples
all breaths become one
the steps flow
  (Cathy)

together with the one I love
on a pilgrimage to happiness
  (Chèvrefeuille)

Shantytown Soweto

happiness shared
as we walk through shantytowns
bread and water
  (Chèvrefeuille)

unconditional love
as we walk our path together
   (Chèvrefeuille)

Pff ... that wasn't easy, it's a real challenge, but it brought me also great happiness. Try it yourself ... by starting your Tan Renga Squared with the haiku by Cathy.

This episode of CD Tan Renga Squared is NOW OPEN for your submissions and will remain open until May 2nd 11.59 AM (CET). For now ... have fun, be inspired and share your Tan Renga Squared with us all here at our Haiku Kai.
