Carpe Diem Tokubetsudesu #72 Use that quote

Dear Haijin, visitors and travelers,

A new Wednesday is almost there, so it's time for a new Tokubetsudesu episode here at our Haiku Kai.
This month I don't have specific ideas for these Tokubetsudesu episodes so it's every week even to me a surprise what will be the prompt or theme.

Maybe you remember that we have had several special features here at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai and this week I love to bring such a special feature back to your attention, because ... I think I will make a whole new month of CDHK with quotes as prompt.

This special feature is titled "Use That Quote" and the goal is to create / compose a haiku (or tanka or another Japanese poetry form) inspired on the quote given.

For this week's episode of Tokubetsudesu themed "Use That Quote" I have a nice quote for you by the Dalai Lama. A real nice quote which gives you a lot of space to create haiku (or tanka).

Here is the quote by the 14th Dalai Lama for your inspiration:

[...] "The purpose of our lives is to be happy". [...]  Dalai Lama

It's a nice quote as you can see and it really gives you freedom to create / compose an all new haiku, tanka or other Japanese poetry form.
the 14th Dalai Lama (real name: Tenzin Gyatso)

Here are a few haiku from my archives on happiness:

simple happiness
cherry blossoms bloom again -
spring is near

timeless beauty -
the glint of polished pebbles
in the crystal brook
on the wings of birds
the faint reflection of the sunset
the sound of the wind
shadows on the wall
one single candle shines its light
towards the world
after the rainstorm
I sit down on the porch
smelling the fresh air

This episode is NOW OPEN for your submissions and will remain open until March 11th at noon (CET). I will try to publish our new episode, a new CD Special, later on.

  1. Very tough prompt! At least I thought so until I saw your haiku. Honestly, you have written fine haiku over the years Chev. But these serve as real inspiration.

  2. My Dutch friend called you "De stille genieter" when I read her your haiku of today. I thought it was a love phrase and very apt. I hope you agree.

    1. She is right I love my life and I am enjoying it very much. If I am a 'stille genieter' ... I think so. Love is very important in all and everything I do. Yes, she your Dutch friend is right ...

  3. It would be interesting to see more of the Dalai Lama's remarks. Out of context, the quote could be mistaken for an endorsement of shallow hedonism.

    1. That's so true ... I will give it a thought. Maybe it's an idea to make a month with only Dalai Lama or maybe a Carpe Diem Theme Week.
I am an admirer of the Dalai Lama and maybe I am more a Buddhist than I thought. Thank you for this comment.
